ARABIAN HORSE DAYS 2014 IN JANÓW PODLASKI

A royal stallion from the Kuhailan Afas family among Polish stock.

Arabian horses are the pride of Polish horse breeding. They are a symbol of the Poles’ love of horses and horsemanship that is many centuries old. The Arabian Horse Days are a great festival for breeders, trainers and stud employees, a celebration of their hard work, often taking years for results to be seen. The uniqueness of Arabian horses is appreciated all over the world, which was demonstrated by the exceptional gesture of the son of the heir to the throne of Bahrain, Prince Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa. The Prince of Bahrain presented a wonderful gift to Deputy Prime Minister Janusz Piechociński, the stallion Kuhailan Afas Maidaan. The stallion was bred in the royal stables of the King of Bahrain, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. In his speech the prince underlined the world class of Polish Pure Bred Arabians. The Stallion Kuhailan Afas Maidaan will be become a part of the Janów stock.

During the auction the presence of Shirley Watts, wife of Charlie Watts, the Rolling Stones’ drummer, was visible as usual. Mrs Watts is an unchanging admirer of the Polish “pearls”. The main host of the Arabian Horse Days was Mr Leszek Świętochowski, President of the Agency for Rural Property. Among the guests were Mr Dariusz Młotkiewicz, Secretary of State in the Office of the President of the Republic of Poland, and Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Mr Eugeniusz Grzeszczak.

The Arabian horse auction Pride of Poland, known all over the world, together with the Summer Arabian Horse Auction and preceding Polish National Arabian Horse Show, are the main events of the Arabian Horse Days. The Arabian Horse Days in Janów Podlaski certainly belong to the category of events where adrenalin levels go up gradually in order to reach a final climax. Without keeping up the tension any longer let us move on to the final right away: And the winner is…

Anyone give more? Sold! The Sunday Pride of Poland auction.

The most exciting day both for spectators as well as breeders was the Sunday of 17 August. This was the day when the Pride of Poland auction was held. When heading towards the indoor arena many probably asked themselves which way this year’s auction will go. Remembering previous years’ auctions we could have some doubt whether we will see a real show this year. However, the buyers played their role very well so the doubt could not be harboured for too long. As expected, the star of the evening was the dark bay mare Piacolla from Michałów. In the hands of her presenter the beautiful, charismatic filly was a real lady, who did not have to prove her class or style. Piacolla seemed to be aware of what was going on and proudly presented her attributes achieving increasingly higher stakes. She used her 5 minutes entirely and became the most expensive horse of the show. The auction ended with a price of EUR 305 thousand. Piacolla will travel to the Athbah Stud in Saudi Arabia.

Norma

The auction itself may be compared to a sea wave, which first hits with great force to then calm down and gather force before it hits again. An impressive beginning was guaranteed by the mare Norma (SK Michałów) sold for EUR 250 thousand to Al Muawd Stud in Saudi Arabia, Perfirka (SO Białka), which travelled to Cedar Ridge Arabians in USA for EUR 220 thousand, and Alabama from Janów, who obtained the price of EUR 165 thousand and was sold to Qatar. Another major hit of the wave was the mare Cenoza from Janów sold for EUR 240 thousand, Emantia from Michałów, which went for EUR 180 thousand and Alhambra, who, after an exciting auction accompanied by loud applause of spectators, was sold for EUR 140 thousand.  These mares were bought by Mrs Shirley Watts, the wife of The Rolling Stones’ drum player. The mares will go to Halsdon Arabians in the United Kingdom.

Perfirka

Polish horses were also bought by purchasers from Germany, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden. Two mares, Pustynna Róża (EUR 15 thousand) and Piraneza (EUR 36 thousand) found buyers in Poland. The Summer Auction took place on the next day. The highest price was proposed for the mare Elfera (EUR 42 thousand), owned by Mr Lech Błaszczyk.  Although the horses themselves did not reach sky high prices (we remember last year’s result of the mare El Saghira from Michałów, EUR 500 thousand!), the total amount from the auction was EUR 2.089 million.

Friday (15.08) – Stallion classes, a considerable disappointment.

The Arabian Horse Days started on Friday (15.08) with the 36th National Pure Bred Arabian Horse Show. This was the day when we could actually see that what seems most predictable can actually change direction and cause a major surprise. The surprise was in store in the 4-6 year old stallion class. The well known stallion Pogrom from Janów (QR Marc (US) –Pętla / Visbaden) owned/bred by SK Janów, who was to be the proverbial cherry on the cake, had to step down to Equator from Michałów, (QR Marc (US) – Ekliptyka / Ekstern). As such the Sunday Championship result became obvious.

Equator

There was no doubt that the leaders will be stallions from Michałów. The winner of the yearling colts class was the bay Morion ( Kahil Al Shaqab (US) – Mesalina / Ekstern) from Michałów of course, with the runners up being two colts from Janów, Pitawal (Kahil Al Shaqab (US) – Pepita / Ekstern) and Erton (Kahil Al Shaqab (US) – Europia / Pesal). Michałów stallions also prevailed in the two-year-old colts class: Złoty Medal (QR Marc (US) – Złota Orda / Pesal) and 7 year old and older stallions: Eryks (Gazal Al Shaqab (QA) –Emmona / Monogramm).

Eryks

Saturday (16.08) – dancing in the rain.

The courier with good weather certainly failed in his job on that day. The rain spared no one. It was a nuisance for the spectators, the horses, presenters and the organizers, who kept repairing constant failures in the on-line transmission. The soft footing in the ring was a major challenge, sometimes impossible to overcome. The yearling filly class was held outside. The fillies competed with each other dancing among raindrops. In the 1A yearling filly class the winner was Ceranova (Kahil Al Shaqab (US) – Cerinola / Ecaho) owned and bred by SK Janów Podlaski with a score of 93.17. Immediately behind her, with scores of 93.00, points were the fillies Pustynia Kahila (Kahil Al Shaqab (US) – Pustynna Malwa / Ekstern) from Michaów and Burza (Kahil Al Shaqab (US) – Bursa / Aslan) from Janów. The 1 B yearling filly class winner was the dark bay Al  Jazeera (Kahil Al Shaqab (US) – Alhasa / Ganges) from Janów, with a score of 94.83 points. The runner up was Forgissima (Vitorio TO (US) – Foggia / Gazal Al Shaqab) with 93.17 pkt.

Pustynia Kahila

The unstable weather was not leaving Janów and forced the organizers to move the show from the outside arena indoors and out again. Two-year-old fillies were shown indoors. In this class the winner was Paterna (Eden C (US) – Pinga / Gazal Al Shaqab) from SK Janów Podlaski with a score of 93.83. The winner in the three-year-old filly class was El Fada (Ekstern – El Fatha / Entyk) from Janów, with 92.7 points. In the 4-6 year old mares class the judges did not spare high marks. The triumphant highest score (94.83 points) was achieved by Pilarosa (Al Adeed Al Shaqab (QA) – Pilar / Fawor) owned and bred by SK Janów Podlaski. The runner up scored 94.17 points and was Zigi Zana (QR Marc (US) – Zagrobla / Monogramm) from SK Michałów.

Pilarosa

The winner of class A of 7-10 year old mares was the grey Gemellia (Piber – Georgia / Monogramm ) bred by SK Michałów and owned by Falborek Arabians, with a score of 94.00 points. In class B the first place went to the mare Pepita (Ekstern – Pepesza / Eukaliptus) from Janów, with a score of 94.50 points. The last and awaited class was 11 year-old and older mares. The horses in this class were the best proof that the best things take a long time to mature, and that chic and style come with age. The highest score in the show, 95.17 points, was given in this class to Georgia (Monogramm (US) – Gizela / Palas) from SK Michałów.

Paterna

Sunday (17.08): snow white beauties in the flashlight.

On Sunday the weather conditions were more forgiving, so the championships could be held outside without major interruptions. The arena was slowly filling up with winning fillies and mares in the classes. And so the title of Polish Filly Champion was the winner of its class, the filly Al Jazeera (Kahil Al Shaqab (US) – Alhasa / Ganges) fron Janów. The silver medal was awarded to another Janów filly, Paterna (Eden C (US) – Pinga / Gazal Al Shaqab), and bronze to Pustynia Kahila (Kahil Al Shaqab (US) – Pustynna Malwa / Ekstern) from Michałów. During the lap of honour Al Jazeera was slightly embarrassed by the title and applause.

Al Jazeera

In their choice of Polish Colt Champion the judges were unanimous. The gold went to Morion (Kahil Al Shaqab (US) – Mesalina / Ekstern) from the Michałów stud. The silver medal was awarded to Pitawal (Kahil Al Shaqab (US) – Pepita / Ekstern) from Janów, and bronze to the grey Larando ( QR Marc (US) – Laranda / Ekstern) from SK Michałów

Morion i Pitawal

The Polish Championship of Older Mares will remain in the memory of all participants as an exceptionally moving aesthetic experience. Dignified grey mares waiting for the verdict of the jury made up a scene which could serve as an illustration for the most exquisite fairy tale. The choice was not easy as every single mare was a strong candidate for the title. However, there can only be one winner. The Polish Champion of Older Mares and at the same time the Best Horse in Show was Pepita (Ekstern – Pepesza / Eukaliptus) from Janów. The silver medal went to the 20-year old Georgia of the Michałów Stud, and bronze to Pilarosa (Al Adeed Al Shaqab (QA) – Pilar / Fawor) from Janów.

Pepita

The results of the Older Stallions Championship repeated those of the Friday competition.  Michałów’s Equator (QR Marc (US) – Ekliptyka / Ekstern) left Janów with the gold trophy, while Pogrom (QR Marc (US) – Pętla / Visbaden) had to make do with the silver. The bronze medal was awarded to Eryks (Gazal Al Shaqab (QA) – Emmona / Monogramm) from SK Michałów.

Pogrom

Special prizes were also awarded on that day. The best coach and presenter of the show was, not without a good reason, Mr Paweł Kozikowski, and the Best Breeder the Janów Podlaski Stud. The members of the Ground Jury of is year’s 36th National Pure Bred Arabian Horse Show were Mrs Renata Schibler (Switzerland), Irina Stigler (Russia), Gianmarco Aragno (italy) and Richard Petty (USA).  President Bronisław Komorowski took Honorary Patronage over the Show.

Precise results to be vound on the webiste of SK Janów Podlaski:  http://www.janow.arabians.pl/pl/pokazy/cj-2014/wyniki.php
